I seconded the motion and it quickly passed. The brainchild's father couldn't have been prouder that we voted in favor with little discussion, but my motivation was selfish. I simply wanted to move on to more urgent matters, such as expanding my emergency department from its inadequate fifteen-bed capacity to thirty.

Our cozy little community had doubled in size the last three years due to the new reservoir christened Lake Geneva, and like side effects to a new medication, other symptoms developed. Tourism increased dramatically. Restaurants sprang up almost overnight, as did resort hotels and entertainment attractions. The town was suffering from growing pains as it matured from adolescence to adulthood. The city council struggled to keep up.

So did the medical center, and it was part of my job as ER Director to wrestle for my department's fair share of the revenue spoils. A year ago, the board voted against my proposal for the new addition, but I did manage to finagle a portable ultra-sound machine and two additional full-time nurses. We wanted a pony, but settled for a kitten.

I picked up a nearby white courtesy telephone and touched "0".

"Operator."

"Hi, Bea. Got something for me?" Beatrice has been in the PBX office so long I think they may have built the hospital around her.

"Hi, doll. Sure I got somethin' for ya'. Me. Just lemme know when you outa that funk you been wadin' in and wanna start datin' again."

Bea's a peach.
